University Village apartments lost power around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday after a severe overnight thunderstorm, with no expected timeline for power restoration as of publication.

Oncor, UTD’s major energy provider, reported that severe lightning and winds of 75 to 80 mph caused “significant” damage in North Texas communities. As of 2:34 p.m., Oncor said it was dealing with 6,775 outages in the aftermath of the storm affecting at least 177,000 customers, including UV.

Over the past academic year, power has typically been restored to UV within a day of each outage.

UTD’s academic buildings and other residential areas, such as the residence halls and Canyon Creek, still have power. Canyon Creek currently has an internet outage with no timeline for restoration as well.

University Housing said in an email sent to affected residents Tuesday afternoon that they can visit the residence halls for power and internet and take showers at the Activity Center and Rec Center West, which are open until 1 a.m. Wednesday. Additionally, Housing directed affected residents to contact Andromeda Hall for all housing-related emergencies until power is restored.

While there is a minimal chance of storms and no forecasted tornado activity for the rest of Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the DFW area until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
