Mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) are widespread across most of the contiguous U.S., including the urban and suburban parts of Texas, and can often be observed in monogamous mated pairs. The male dove can be distinguished from the female through its longer tail and a brighter, iridescent patch of feathers on the nape.
