Retrograde wins ethics in journalism award

On April 15, the Peter F. Collier Awards for Ethics in Journalism awarded The Retrograde second place in its student category. 

The investigative article, written by staff writer Sherlyn Dominguez, Assistant Managing Editor Tyler Crivella and Editor-in-Chief Gregorio Olivares Gutierrez, was recognized “for the ethical use of data to confirm sexual assault survivors’ accounts of shortcomings in the university’s handling of Title IX complaints.” 

The Collier Awards “honor journalism that meets the highest ethical standards in the face of pressure or incentives to do otherwise,” the organization said on its website. 

Other winners included The Atlantic for “Signalgate,” Washington Square News for reporting on an admissions data breach, The Associated Press for “Freedom of Speech (Gulf of Mexico)” and The Stanford Daily writing on “accountability for Stanford University’s Title IX process,” among others.
